Safety and Welfare

If something is wrong, or you are not sure whether it is, this page is for you. Nothing you read here is recorded, and you are never punished for asking or for reporting. This page is for people and safety; for the laptop, the network or your account, use ICT Support.

Right Now

If someone is hurt or in danger, call. These numbers work from any phone in Kenya, with or without credit. Tap a number to dial it.

On Campus: Who to Go To

  1. Safeguarding OfficerNamed on the board in the studio and on your who-to-call card.
Any time something is wrong, or you are not sure whether it is.
  2. Deputy Safeguarding OfficerNamed on the board in the studio and on your who-to-call card.
When the Safeguarding Officer is away, or when the problem is with them.
  3. Welfare leadNamed on the board in the studio and on your who-to-call card.
The quiet room, the private hour, and any day this week by booking in person.
  4. Gender and Welfare CommitteeNamed on the board in the studio and on your who-to-call card.
For what the circles raise, and for anything about equality on campus.

Report It: Sauti Yangu

Sauti Yangu is the programme's reporting line, with your name or without it. A report goes to the Safeguarding Officer, not to your trainer. The whole promise, the six ways to report and what happens after a report are on the Safeguarding page.

  1. Say what happened, when and where, in any language.
  2. You hear back on what happens next; an anonymous report is still acted on.
  3. If the person you would report is the one with power over you, the rule is still on your side.

The Seven Promises

Said on day one and kept every day, by every member of staff.

  1. Two adults. A trainer is never alone behind a closed door with one learner.
  2. No private digital contact. Class groups only, work only, never at night.
  3. No leverage. Whoever grades you does not control your money, and the other way round.
  4. No romantic or sexual contact between staff and learners, ever.
  5. No shouting, humiliation or insults, about anything, from anyone.
  6. No photos or film without asking. You can say no, and you can withdraw consent.
  7. No gifts, loans or borrowing between staff and learners.

Looking After Yourself

The check-in routine from the mental health session is the floor for everyone on campus, and it is private.

  1. Three signals. Your own early signs that the load is too much: sleep, appetite, temper, going quiet. Written on your card, read by nobody.
  2. Your person at red. One person you talk to when the signals show: a peer, a trainer, the welfare team, family. Any trusted person counts.
  3. A rest block. In your week plan, and kept.
  4. The quiet room. Open with the welfare lead and a coach of each gender; walk in, no sign-in, no list. Any other day, book with the welfare lead in person, never through a message.
  5. Your own gender. For any private conversation you can ask for a coach or trainer of your own gender, and the answer is yes.

Your AI is not a counsellor. The campus path is real people.

Mobile LEAP Explorers

  1. Your Cohort Captain is the first person to go to at your training location, and your Guide or any Coach will take you there.
  2. The numbers above work everywhere, not only on the BootCamp campus.
  3. Sauti Yangu takes a report from any level.

If a Learner Comes to You

For trainers, coaches, captains and System Admins.

  1. Listen. Do not promise to keep it secret; say who you will tell and why.
  2. Tell the Safeguarding Officer the same day, in person. Write down what was said, not what you think of it.
  3. Do not question the other person yourself, and do not put anything in a group chat or in Asha.
  4. Stay with the learner until they are with the person who can help.

Everyday Help

  1. The trainer on duty is in the room every afternoon, and two every evening.
  2. The Cohort Captain for attendance, welfare, arrivals and anything about the week.
  3. ICT help: the ICT Support form, which writes to request@learninglions.org, for the laptop, the network, your account and the help desk.
  4. The circles: TechDada for the women, TechKaka for the men.
