Your First Server

Level 2 · BootCampSCS1 FoundationsTaught week 2 Thursday morning

Start the Lesson

By the end you can say what a server is in one plain sentence and why the first one is free and inside your own laptop, build an Ubuntu Server virtual machine from a written specification, take a named checkpoint before every change, get in at the console and by SSH to the server's own address, serve a page from it and open it in your browser, and answer "what actually changed, and how do I know?" with evidence rather than a guess.

Start the lesson 69 moves in 12 parts. You need: Ubuntu-SCS and your SCS repo from SCS1.4 · your copy of the SCS1.5 folder, copied down from Mufasa · your password manager · your build sheet and the Evidence Card · your notebook and a pen

What You Turn In

  1. Screenshot: your terminal inside the server beside the browser showing your page
    1. SSH prompt on scs-server; your page at the server's own address
  2. Screenshot of the checkpoint list
    1. clean-install, page-served and nginx, each taken before the change
  3. Repo link: server-log.md
    1. Every step with typed, expected and seen; the checkpoint name before each change; a commit after each
  4. Break-it drill write-up, in the log
    1. What you looked at, in what order, what told you, what you did — evidence, not a guess
  5. Repo link: method-note.md
    1. Six lines committed; the sixth from a real difference between expected and seen
  6. check-scs1.5 receipt
    1. All eight automatic checks PASS
  7. Rebuild from the log alone fill in on the hub
    1. Restored clean-install, SSH and the nginx page back from the log; the missed step added and committed; the duty trainer saw the page

Stuck, or want to check your thinking? Paste this card into your own AI and ask it to question you, not answer for you.
